When Curiosity Kills the Profits: an Experimental Examination
Economic theory predicts that in a first-price auction with equal and observable valuations, bidders earn zero profits. Theory also predicts that if valuations are not common knowledge, then since it is weakly dominated to bid your valuation, bidders will bid less and earn positive profits. Hence, rational players in an auction game should prefer less public information. We are perhaps more used to seeing these results in the equivalent Bertrand setting. In our experimental auction, we find that individuals without information on each other's valuations earn more profits than those with common knowledge. Then, given a choice between the two sets of rules, half the individuals still preferred to have the public information. We discuss possible explanations, including ambiguity aversion.First-price auctions, experiments, value of information, common knowledge, ambiguity aversion, Bertrand, public information
Goldstone Gauginos
Models of supersymmetry with Dirac gauginos provide an attractive scenario
for physics beyond the standard model. The "supersoft" radiative corrections
and suppressed SUSY production at colliders provide for more natural theories
and an understanding of why no new states have been seen. Unfortunately, these
models are handicapped by a tachyon which is naturally present in existing
models of Dirac gauginos. We argue that this tachyon is absent, with the
phenomenological successes of the model preserved, if the right handed gaugino
is a (pseudo-)Goldstone field of a spontaneously broken anomalous flavor
symmetry.Comment: 5 pages, 1 figure. v2: minor changes to text, references added and

Atomic Interactions in Precision Interferometry Using Bose-Einstein Condensates
We present theoretical tools for predicting and reducing the effects of
atomic interactions in Bose-Einstein condensate (BEC) interferometry
experiments. To address mean-field shifts during free propagation, we derive a
robust scaling solution that reduces the three-dimensional Gross-Pitaevskii
equation to a set of three simple differential equations valid for any
interaction strength. To model the other common components of a BEC
interferometer---condensate splitting, manipulation, and recombination---we
generalize the slowly-varying envelope reduction, providing both analytic
handles and dramatically improved simulations. Applying these tools to a BEC
interferometer to measure the fine structure constant (Gupta, et al., 2002), we
find agreement with the results of the original experiment and demonstrate that
atomic interactions do not preclude measurement to better than part-per-billion
accuracy, even for atomic species with relatively large scattering lengths.
These tools help make BEC interferometry a viable choice for a broad class of
precision measurements.Comment: 8 pages, 6 figures, revised based on reviewer comment
Ambiguous Solicitation: Ambiguous Prescription
We conduct a two-phase laboratory experiment, separated by several weeks. In the first phase, we conduct urn games intended to measure ambiguity aversion on a representative population of undergraduate students. In the second phase, we invite the students back with four different solicitation treatments, varying in the ambiguity of information regarding the task and the payout of the laboratory experiment. We find that those who return do not differ from the overall pool with respect to their ambiguity version. However, no solicitation treatment generates a representative sample. The ambiguous task treatment drives away the ambiguity averse disproportionally, and the detailed task treatment draws in the ambiguity averse disproportionally.laboratory experimental methods, experimental economics, laboratory selection effects
A Double-Barrelled Assault: How Technology and Judicial Interpretations Threaten Public Access to Law Enforcement Records
Recently, an explosion of media coverage has revealed gross misconduct on the part of many police officers in the United States. From Rodney King to Mark Furman, the events have raised grave questions about whether existing checks against police misconduct are effective. Yet, at this crucial period, technological advances and judicial interpretations undermine the ability of the public to access police records. The Author argues that most Freedom of Information (FOI) statutes provide inadequate access to police records in light of technological advances and narrow judicial interpretations of FOI statutes
Models of Goldstone Gauginos
Models with Dirac gauginos provide appealing scenarios for physics beyond the
standard model. They have smaller radiative corrections to the Higgs mass, a
suppression of certain SUSY production processes, and ameliorated flavor
constraints. Unfortunately, they also generally have tachyons, the solutions to
which typically spoil these positive features. The recently proposed "Goldstone
Gaugino" mechanism provides a simple solution that eliminates these tachyonic
states. We provide details on this mechanism and explore models for its origin.
In particular, we find SUSY QCD models that realize this idea simply, and
discuss scenarios for unification.Comment: 33 pages, 4 figure
Prevention, Mental Health Risk, LGBTQ+ Youth and Young Adults, Jackson County, Indiana
Goal Statement: Acknowledge and highlight the increased mental health risks for LGBTQ+ youth and young adults while working to implement prevention efforts to mitigate, and eventually eliminate the increased risks for this population.
Significant Findings: The LGBTQ+ youth and young adult population faces many challenges throughout their daily lives. One such challenge plaguing the community is their increased risk for mental health concerns compared to their heterosexual, cisgender counterparts (The Trevor Project, n.d.; Marlay et al., 2022). In the rural Jackson County, Indiana community, very few prevention and treatment efforts are implemented to serve this community. It is worth noting that there are very limited studies regarding the implementation and effectiveness of LGBTQ+ youth and young adult prevention and treatment programs related to the mental health risks experienced by this population. However, a feasibility study was conducted for a program called Being Out with Strength (BOWS), and it was found to have a high demand with a high probability of success (Hall et al., 2019). Implementing programs such as BOWS and strong advocacy at the institutional, community, and public policy levels could elicit many positive changes and contribute to the overall goal of preventing mental health risks for this population.
Objectives/Strategies/Interventions/Next Steps: Develop and implement effective prevention programs in community mental health facilities like BOWS. Increase peer-reviewed studies to determine the effectiveness of prevention programs for this population. Engage in multiple advocacy efforts to make changes within the community and at the public policy level. Increase the visibility of allyship to the local LGBTQ+ youth and young adult community. Enhance focus of LGBTQ+ cultural competency among all professionals in rural communities
The time resolved measurement of ultrashort THz-band electric fields without an ultrashort probe
The time-resolved detection of ultrashort pulsed THz-band electric field
temporal profiles without an ultrashort laser probe is demonstrated. A
non-linear interaction between a narrow-bandwidth optical probe and the THz
pulse transposes the THz spectral intensity and phase information to the
optical region, thereby generating an optical pulse whose temporal electric
field envelope replicates the temporal profile of the real THz electric field.
This optical envelope is characterised via an autocorrelation based FROG
measurement, hence revealing the THz temporal profile. The combination of a
narrow-bandwidth, long duration, optical probe and self-referenced FROG makes
the technique inherently immune to timing jitter between the optical probe and
THz pulse, and may find particular application where the THz field is not
initially generated via ultrashort laser methods, such as the measurement of
longitudinal electron bunch profiles in particle accelerators.Comment: 7 pages, 3 figures, submitted to AP
